This 2-4 hour workshop defines trauma, trauma-informed practices, and the intersection of trauma and suicidality. It includes current theories in the field of trauma and suicide prevention. We explore Thomas Joiner's Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, and how it informs effective suicide prevention efforts. Domains including single event trauma, chronic and ongoing trauma, collective trauma, ancestral and intergenerational trauma will be discussed in order to expand our understanding of the relationship between trauma and suicide. We will use the socio-ecological model to look at how institutionalized discrimination and oppression may contribute to suicide rates in the US.
